Your permanent teeth are handy tools when it comes to biting, chewing, talking, and smiling. If you take good care of them (by keeping up on oral hygiene and visiting Dr. Brandon Green regularly), then there is a good chance they will remain healthy and strong for a lifetime. To help you know more about your permanent, or adult, teeth, our dental team is happy to share some facts with you.
-Permanent teeth are oral bones that are strong and reliable. It’s typical to have 32 teeth in the mouth. These teeth grow into place in the younger years of life when they replace the baby teeth. It’s normal to have four different types of teeth: molars, bicuspids, cuspids, and incisors.
-Your teeth can be used to do many things. Some of those things are biting, chewing, grinding, and crushing. They can also be used to tear things, but that is not recommended because it can be damaging to use the teeth as tools. Typically, the incisors are used to bite and cut food while the bicuspids and molars are used to grind and crush food.
-There are three different parts of a tooth. First, there is the crown. This is the top and sides of the tooth that is white. It has a protective layer called the enamel. Second, there is the neck, which is the section of the tooth between the crown and the root. Third, there is the root, which is the section of the tooth that extends through the gums and into the jawbone. The root holds the tooth in place.
