To help limit the risks of dental damage and oral health hazards that often arise due to poor oral hygiene, it is important to make sure that you’re implementing effective oral health care cleaning techniques every single day. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis. Not only should you be brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day, but you should also be doing so with the proper techniques and tools.

Brushing is extremely effective for keeping your teeth safe, but it cannot accurately clean between teeth. In order to accomplish this task, an interdental cleaner such as a water flosser or dental floss will be needed. Water flossers use a beam of water to clean between teeth whereas dental floss uses thread. Depending on the product you use, you can effectively make sure you clean your teeth each and every day to keep your smile safe. For product recommendations and suggestions, speak with your dentist or look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on product packaging.

It is important to make sure that your flossing for at least 2 minutes every day. If you have decided to select dental floss, make sure it is shred-resistant and able to function for an entire session without shredding. Typically, you should use a strand that is about 20“ in length to ensure that you can clean between each and every tooth without using the same section of the strand more than once. In addition, never use the same strand for more than one flossing session. In order to keep your smile safe, it is always a good idea to wrap each end of the floss around a finger on each hand and slowly and gently floss between your teeth.
